Is my eye test bulk billed?
Anthony Liska bulk bills eye examinations to Medicare, if you are eligible for a full examination. However, additional fees usually apply for examinations involving digital retinal imaging equipment. These digital scans are not covered by Medicare. It is expected that most comprehensive eye examinations will include retinal photography and a fee of $20 will be payable for this.
Please make sure you bring your current Medicare card with you to your appointment to be bulk billed.
You do not need a referral from a medical practitioner to have an eye examination by an optometrist.
Most contact lens consultations are not covered by Medicare and therefore cannot be bulk-billed to Medicare. There is usually a fitting fee for first time contact lens wearers.
Medicare does not cover spectacles, contact lenses and optical aids. These are covered by Private health insurance funds in their ancillary or ‘extras’ policies.
